Rediscovering Community in the Gym: A Journey Back to Connection

Updated: Feb 15

The Changing Atmosphere of Gyms

Looking at the atmosphere in most gyms around the world, I can see how much it has changed. Twenty-two years ago, when I started lifting weights, things were different. There were no tripods or influencers. Just people who wanted to work on themselves, improve their mental health, and, of course, transform their bodies.

Back then, the younger guys learned from the older bodybuilders. If not from them, the newest information came from magazines. If you looked at our training routines back then with today’s knowledge, you’d probably laugh out loud. We didn’t know better, but we surely trained hard.

The Sense of Community

One thing, however, was always present: a sense of community. In the early 2000s, everyone was in the gym for the same reason. There was no platform to showcase yourself. Just us, the weights, and hard training. It was a real community.

Fast forward to today, and things look very different. In most commercial gyms, people train alone. They come in every day, often without even talking to a single soul. The frequent visitors might exchange a friendly nod, but that’s about it.

The gym reflects the loneliness crisis like almost no other place. Most individuals are there to fight depression, get over heartbreak, or deal with personal challenges. What’s missing is a friend—someone who fires you up, even if it’s just for the one or two hours you spend training.

The Rise of New Fitness Trends

Community? Not really. That’s exactly why phenomena like Hyrox, padel, and running clubs are booming right now. These fitness trends, whether new or old, aren’t really about competition. They’re not even about the sport itself.

They all have two things in common: Almost anyone can participate, and they provide a sense of belonging. Hyrox athletes show it with their patches on their backpacks, silently saying, “I’m part of this.” Runners collect medals, hang them on the wall, and proudly wear their race shirts on everyday jogs. Padel players wave their rainbow flag (just kidding).

Longing for Connection

I wish this sense of community would return to gyms. I hope that new members are welcomed by the “old dogs” and encouraged to come back. I want people who want to change their lives to feel safe and supported, not scared off by judgmental looks or demoralizing comments.

I don’t think that’s delusional. Let’s be human. And being human also means creating community. That’s how we thrive best.

Building Connections in the Gym

The Importance of Inclusivity

Creating an inclusive environment in the gym is essential. When we foster a welcoming atmosphere, we encourage everyone to participate. This can be as simple as greeting someone new or offering to spot them during a lift. Small gestures can make a big difference.

Group Workouts: A Path to Friendship

Consider joining group workouts or classes. These settings provide opportunities to meet new people and build connections. Whether it’s a spin class or a yoga session, the shared experience can help break the ice. You might find a workout buddy or even a lifelong friend.

Sharing Goals and Progress

Another way to foster community is by sharing your fitness goals and progress. When we open up about our journeys, we invite others to do the same. This creates a supportive environment where everyone can celebrate each other’s achievements, big or small.

Encouraging Each Other

Let’s not forget the power of encouragement. A simple “You’ve got this!” or “Keep going!” can motivate someone to push through their limits. When we cheer each other on, we create a positive atmosphere that benefits everyone.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

In conclusion, let’s strive to bring back that sense of community in our gyms. We can do this by being more inclusive, participating in group activities, sharing our journeys, and encouraging one another. Together, we can transform our gym experience from a solitary endeavor into a thriving community.

Let’s embrace the power of connection. After all, we’re all in this together, working towards better health and happiness.
